Wiring the Juan de Fuca Plate for Science: The Neptune System
نویسندگان
چکیده
NEPTUNE will wire the Juan de Fuca Plate in the northeast Pacific Ocean. It will enable in-depth study of life in extreme environments, plate tectonics, oceanography, and fisheries, to name but a few of the many topics. This will be accomplished by means of a multi-node submarine fiber-optic/power cable network deployed around the plate. It will provide power for the instrumentation as well as make seafloor sensors and interactive experiments easily accessible via the Internet to researchers, educators, and the public around the globe. The NEPTUNE Project is beginning its development phase. The many and varied issues associated with the infrastructure technical design are discussed, including power, communications, and data management and archiving.

The NEPTUNE observatory as seismic warning system
It is proposed to install an underwater observing system off the coast of Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia in order to allow long-term scientific study of the ocean. The area to be covered corresponds to the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate. Electric power will be provided via a cable similar to a submarine telecommunications cable, and communications will be via fiber optics in t...
متن کاملThe NEPTUNE Scientific Submarine Cable System
The NEPTUNE scientific submarine cable system will “wire” the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate and turn it into an interactive ocean sciences laboratory. NEPTUNE will provide 30 seafloor nodes distributed over a 500 by 1000 km area to which many scientific instruments may be attached. The nodes will supply power at the several kW level and data communications at a Gb/s rate. NEPTUNE will utilize an ...
متن کاملNEPTUNE Power System: Science Node Converter Startup Operations Design and Implementation Circuit
The North-East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments (NEPTUNE) is an underwater power and communications network for scientific experiments. It is proposed for the ocean floor of the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate in the Northeast Pacific Ocean. The NEPTUNE power system is a 10 kV dc network. In the science nodes connected to the NEPTUNE network, 10 kV to 400 V dc-dc converters are us...
متن کاملNew Scientific Cabled Observing Systems: Neptune and Arena
Large scale, long term submarine cabled observatory systems represent a new direction for oceanographic research infrastructure. The power and bandwidth of recent generation technology provides several orders of magnitude more capability than has ever been available to the oceanographic research community. Coupled with a multi-decade observing presence, these new capabilities provide an opportu...
